Model of pit head winding gear, based on Sovereign Number 2 Pit, Leigh, made by Mr E Mayor with electronics by E Mayor Junior. C.1970.
Tandem horizontal steam winding engine (working) partly housed in wooden casing and on wooden stand.
This type of steam winder came into general use around 1880. The vertical engine had been previously in favour. By 1885 steam pressures had reached 1001lbs per square inch. A more complex design at Astley Green Colliery, Lancs, could wind 8 tons up a shaft 873 yards deep in 60 seconds at a maximum rope speed of 82 feet per second.
