This wooden bobbin was used on a speed frame in the textile industry.
The bobbin would have had a length of thread wound onto it, ready to be woven into cloth. Once empty of thread it could be rewound with thread and reused.
Features of this bobbin include two keyways cut into the metal base to slot over the machine spindle, securing it while it was spinning at high speeds on the machine.
Speed frames convert untwisted cotton fibres called slivers into low twisted strands called roving, ready to be spun into long, thin, strong yarn.
