Cop from a self acting mule

This small cardboard cop is wound with white cotton yarn, tapered at both ends. A cop is a type of yarn package.

The empty cop fitted vertically over a spindle on a self acting mule carriage. A twist would be added to the yarn and then wound onto the cop in one motion as the carriage moved in and out.

Self acting mules were one stage in the mechanised process of spinning fibres into thread. A cop loaded with yarn was the outcome of the machine.
