This computer was backed by the Science and Engineering Research Council in an attempt to establish this model and ICL as the supplier, support provider (and hopefully manufacturer) of a standard single user computer to be used in academia. It was acknowledged that many systems and softwares would be coming onto the market. It marked a move away from mainframe provision to single user devices.
