Renold bicycle chain in tin
Hans Renold, a skilled Swiss engineer inventor founded the company Hans Renold Co. in 1879 in Salford. It is oldest established transmission chain company still in existence in the world. I has existed continuously in the Greater Manchester city region. Their headquarter are now based in Wythenshawe, Manchester.
Renold inventted the block cycle chain and decided not to hold on to his patent. He openly gave his idea to the cycle trade for all to freely manufacture. His most important invention was the bush roller chain. The solid bushing has even contact throughout the pin/bushing area, which reduces the pressure points, meaning less wear over time. It is a testament to Renold's design that incredibly bike chains have changed very little and are still used today.
