Cop-reel hank-winding machine, made by Platt Brothers & Co. Ltd, Oldham, 1897.

This machine wound yarn in to ‘hanks’, ready to be dipped in dye. Weavers needed coloured yarn to make patterned cloth. Manchester’s scientists and entrepreneurs built a booming chemical industry, supplying coloured dyes to the textiles trade.
