Scutcher, made by Platt Brothers & Co. Ltd, Oldham, 1889, and used at Bank Top Mill, Oldham.
Grown and picked in the fields, cotton was full of seeds, sand and soil. The scutcher, invented in 1797, beat out dirt and rolled out the cotton fibres. Platt Brothers made this example in Oldham in 1889. They employed thousands of workers, supplying textile machinery to Manchester and across the world.
