A comprehensive early account of the L & M including the parliamentary history, construction, locomotive trials, opening (with Huskisson's tragic death), the derailment of William the Fourth on Sankey Viaduct and the methods taken to ensure its safety overnight (the illustration shows it tied to a tree).
