Ring doubler and associated parts and accessories, manufactured by Platt Bros and Co. Ltd in Oldham, around 1940-1960 and used in the Textiles Department at the University of Manchester Institute of Technology.

Doubling is the process of combining two or more single threads together to create one strand of strong, even yarn. The yarn produced can be used as the warp for weaving, or for making embroidery or sewing threads.

This ring doubler could combine up to four single threads to create both plain and fancy yarns. It was manufactured by Platt Brothers of Oldham, who were the world’s biggest manufacturers of textile machinery at the turn of the twentieth century.
