Horizontal duplex winch that could have been run on steam or compressed air (compressed air would have been used underground). Made by John Wood and Sons, Barley Brook Foundry, Wigan

Knott and Wood was a Wigan based engineering company established in 1880. In the 1890s the company became Wood and Gee. After the death of Mr Gee, the company was carried on as John Wood and Sons from 1902. The company made steam engines, air compressors, coal mining machinery, haulage and winding engines.
