Model of a typical horse gin colliery of about 1800. Made in 1988 by Richard Fairhurst. Display label inside the case.

Often only 10 to 20 men would make up the workforce on a typical horse gin colliery. Coal would up in boxes or baskets was riddled before being sold of the surface or being collected by pack horses.

Richard Fairhurs made this model for Salford Mining Museum when he was just 17 years old. He volunteered at Salford Mining Museum while he was studying A Level sciences at Eccles College. His achievement in making the well-researched and accurate model was praised by the museum curator and was reported in the Manchester Evening News at the time.
