'Harry' the trumpet-playing robot was the first walking humanoid robot Toyota developed to promote its concept of caring and intelligent robot assistants. Produced by Toyota Motor Corporation's Partner RObot division, it was launched in 2005 and 3 were built.
Harry was designed to play the trumpet authentically – a skilled job requiring dexterous fingers, flexible lips and ‘breath’. Harry also showcased the rapid progress Toyota made within just five years of venturing into humanoid robotics.
Harry’s musical repertoire included jazzed-up versions of ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’, ‘What a Wonderful World’, ‘Moon River’ and Japanese pop hits.
Harry could play true notes – an internal compressor pumped air through its artificial lips, making the same ‘lip buzz’ as a human trumpeter, replicate the nimble fingering of a human trumpeter, and sway its hips and tap its feet in time to the music
