Silver watch in the shape of a Tudor rose by William Clay
- Made:
- 1640
Watch in a silver-gilt case, cast into the pattern of a Tudor rose, by William Clay, England c.1640. Silver-gilt dial with an engraved floral centre. Movement with verge escapement and a train of three wheels and worm-and-wheel set up. The balance spring has one turn in its coil and is likely to have been added very early, necessitating the raising of the balance cock. Signed ‘William Clay London’.
Clay took apprentices through the Clockmakers’ Company but was never formally made a Freeman of the Company. Clockmakers' Museum No. 25
