Gold pair cased watch by Windmills, London c.1720. The outer gold case embellished with fine repoussé depicting the subject of Alexander and Diogenes on the back, and fruit and flowers around the edges. Stamped with IL. 8905 on the inside. The inner case is plain gold. Gold champleve dial with blued steel beetle and poker hands. Dial signed 'Windmills'. Movement with verge escapement, signed on the backplate 'Windmills London 8905'.
This watch was likely made during the partnership of Joseph Windmills and his son Thomas Windmills, which started in around 1700. Joseph was admitted to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers in 1671 and was made its Master in 1702. Thomas was admitted to the Company in 1695, becoming its Master in 1718.
