Pedometer by Spencer and Perkins, London 1775-1800. Gilt-metal case with actuating lever and hook. White enamel dial with large central hand which indicates up to 100 steps (1/10th mile). The small left-hand dial records up to 1,000 steps (1 mile) and the right-hand dial up to 12 miles. Signed 'Spencer & Perkins London'. Clockmakers' Museum No. 671
Worn at the waistband and operated by the movement of the thigh, this pedometer records distances walked up to 12 miles. Given to the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers by the Royal Clockmaker Benjamin Lewis Vulliamy in 1849. It is recorded in the Company's minutes as having been the property of Queen Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz.
