Two seals and an armorial clasp
Two seals mounted on ivory handles. The first seal is made of cornelian and set in a silver gilt mount. The second is cut in silver. Also, a cotton bag in which they would have been stored.
In the same inventory listing is an armorial clasp from which Sir David Salomons’ shrieval chain was suspended.
The Company was granted its arms in 1671. In 1692, the Court commissioned ‘a Common Seal of silver about the breadth of a milled Half Crown piece’. This is the seal with the Company’s arms cut in cornelian.
When the cornelian was damaged, the second seal ‘engraved with the Company’s Arms in lieu of that, now in the custody of the Clerk’ was ordered. It cost £7-17-6d.
