Oval verge escapement watch by William Petit. Engraved gilt-brass case with an engraved silver band and winding hole with shutter. Gilt-brass dial plate with applied engraved silver dial. Movement with pinned on balance cock, signed 'G Petit Fecit'. London, c.1630.
Guiliam or William Petit is recorded by trade as a watch casemaker, and although his cases may survive in large numbers they cannot be identified. The Clockmakers' Company minutes note that Petit presented a silver cup as a gift to the Company in 1655 (see L2016-2299). Petit served as journeyman to David Ramsay in Tuttle Street. He later worked in Westminster.
