Volkman Spoon - double ended (Small). Made by Downs Surgical Ltd. Mitcham

Small double ended Volkmann type spoon, Made by Downs Surgical Ltd. Mitcham, Surrey, England

Known as a spoon or a scoop, this instrument is used during surgeries to scrape away bone or tissue.

Surgeons worked with instrument makers to develop tools, often naming them after themselves. Richard von Volkmann (1830-1889) specialised in orthopaedic srugery and was an early adopter of antiseptic technique. Many of his observations still use his name.

In addition to surgery he also wrote children's books under the name Richard Leander.
