Robotic humanoid torso, with upper arms and head, built to bear a resemblance to actress Gemma Chan, by Engineered Arts Ltd., Falmouth, Cornwall, England, and Little Gem Media Ltd., London, England 2016.
This robot was commissioned by Channel 4 for their 2016 TV documentary How to Build a Human, and is an uncanny simulacra of the actress Gemma Chan. It was used to test whether humans, interviewing the robot via Skype, could determine if it was the human actress, or a robot stand-in – with mixed results. It represents our enduring fascination with ultra-lifelike robots, and is perhaps the only one of its kind built so far in the UK, as opposed to the USA or, most likely, Japan.
