Motor vehicle, Sunbeam Mabley ‘Sociable’ voiturette, registration no. IE4 (Isle of Man reg. 1908-MN), 1902.
The first Sunbeam brand automobile produced by cycle manufacturer John Marston Limited, the Sunbeam Mabley sociable was designed by architect Maxwell Mabberley-Smith. Unlike many early cars which closely followed the design precedents of horsedrawn carriages, the Sunbeam Mabley does not in any way try to fit into this category of horseless carriage. It has an unusual diamond wheelbase, designed to prevent sideways skidding. However, this also makes it unstable and liable to tipping over. The two seats are arranged facing sideways in opposite directions so the driver and passenger can talk easily. This configuration of seats facing each other is known as a 'sociable' and is found in horsedrawn carriages and other early automobiles, although they more commonly face forwards and backwards. The driver sat in the rear seat and steered using a tiller.
This car is an excellent example of the early development of the motor car when designers were still experimenting before the format of a four-wheel rectangular wheelbase with forward-facing seats and an internal combustion engine became dominant.
