A prototype diagnostic kit, USENSe™, made by Module Innovations Private Ltd to detect four bacterial causing infections from urine, Puna, India, 2017

Designed to be used by clinicians with patients in clinics or at the bedside, USENSe™ is a credit card size test that detects four of the major causes of urinary tract infections in a single test. Using a urine sample, placed in the centre, a colour change alerts the user to the presence of bacteria in under 30 minutes. A laboratory test takes two to three days. In 2017, the Usense™ was 96% accurate. The latest version gives results in 15 minutes.

Developed and made by Indian company, Module Innovations Private Ltd, this is one of the potential entries for the Longitude Prize. The Prize is a £8m fund for a diagnostic test that will be accurate, rapid, affordable and easy to use anywhere in the world to ensure that antibiotics are used responsibly in the face of growing antibiotic resistance. The company wona Discovery Award (2017) and Boost Grant (2019), awarded by the Longitude Prize, to financially aid their work.
