A photograph of a group of people holding and standing by a large petition in support of equal pay, shortly to be presented to the House of Commons, 8th March 1954. The caption reads “Civil Service Petition on Equal Pay Arrives At House. March 8th 1954. Tied in massive bundles, a petition in support of equal pay for women organised by the main Civil Service staff organisations arrives at the St. Stephen’s Entrance of the House of Commons, London, to-day (Monday). It will be presented to Parliament tomorrow by Mr T. C. Pannell, Labour Member of Parliament for Leeds, West. A few minutes earlier, a similar petition organised by the Equal Pay Campaign Committee had arrived to be presented to Parliament tomorrow by Miss Irene Ward, Conservative MP for Tynemouth.” The photograph was taken by a Daily Herald staff photographer.
