Portrait of Benjamin Gray (1676 – 1764), oil on canvas, attributed to J. Davison, mid 18th century.
Gray is first recorded as working in St. Martin’s-in-the-Fields in 1716. By 1752 he had moved to 74 Pall Mall. He made fine quality clocks and watches, and in 1743 was appointed Watchmaker in Ordinary to the King. In the same year he went into partnership with François Justin Vulliamy. He was probably the first to make pedometers in London.
