Eyes of Hell (aka The Mask) was a 1961 Canadian horror film that made innovative use of 3D effects. Filmed mostly in black and white 2D, whenever the lead character, Dr Barnes, puts on the tribal mask that causes him to have psychedelic visions, he tells the audience to “Put the mask on now!”, so that they share his hallucinations in 3D. The Mask is representative of the wide range of innovative developments in 20th century cinema, attempting to make the cinema experience more immersive and engaging.
