The first orangutan to be born at London Zoo. Original caption reads: No orangutan has ever been successfully reared in the British Isles, so London Zoo are taking very special care of the new female baby born to 'Toli' and 'Charlie' last Sunday afternoon. The section in which they live in the Money House is cordoned off to give them seclusion for the first week or two and 'Toli' has taken the question of 'no visitors' into her own hands by disappearing under the cover of her straw bedding. Seven-and-a-half years old 'Toli' came to the Zoo when she was a year old and 'Charlie' arrived when he was three. He was brought back by David Attenborough after a 'Zoo Quest' expedition to Indonesia in 1956. Photo shows: 'Toli' the orangutan at the London Zoo with her day-old baby - the first orangutan to be born at the London Zoo.
