Transport 2000 was established in the early 1973 with an aim to stop massive railway cuts. It was formed by various railway unions, the rail industry, environmental pressure groups and other non-government organisations. It was funded by the rail unions, the Railway Industry Association and later by British Rail to make the wider case for rail as part of sustainable transport policies.
In 2007 the organisation changed its name to Campaign for Better Transport. The organisation now runs as an independent charity and is governed by a board of trustees. The organisation still receives funding from the rail industry.
