Instrument panel from one of the Apollo Mission Simulators (there were three total) used to train astronauts to fly the Apollo Command Module. The panel also includes a DSKY which was installed when it was placed on display at NASM and is not original.
This console is a working replica of the controls inside the real Command Module spacecraft. NASA had a simulation team, knowns as Simsups, that ran problem scenarios on the simulators to see how quickly the crew could solve the problem. These simulations were essential to the success of the Apollo programme and ensured that the astronauts and mission controllers on the ground had many hours of practice before the real mission launched.
This instrument panel has roughly 500 controls which were specifically designed to be used by hands with large gloves. Important switches like engine-firing and jettisoning controls (when parts of the spacecraft are separated) were protected by a guard so that they could not be accidentally switched on by bumping them with a knee or an elbow.
