London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) train operating company took over the Intercity East Coast franchise in June 2018 after Virgin Trains East Coast, whose contract to operate the franchise was ended by the government due to financial losses. The Department for Transport took over the franchise as operator of last resort using LNER as the branding, the name was used previously by a former railway company between 1923 and 1948. The Azuma multiple unit trains were developed between 2014 and 2018, to replace the Intercity 125 and 225 fleets under the Intercity Express programme. The trains were assembled by Hitachi Rail in Newton Aycliffe, County Durham and are bi-mode, powered by their diesel generators or by electric motors that draw their power from overhead wires.
