Made:
1953-4 in Blackburn

Section of tank plate and jointing from No.18 gas holder at Great Harwood Gasworks, by Robert Dempster & Sons Ltd, Blackburn, 1953-4

The circular tanks of above-ground holders were designed to contain millions of cubic litres of water. Accordingly, the sheets of plate steel from which they were made had to be thick, strong and extremely well joined – much like the hull of a ship. The varying patterns of riveting reflect the changes in water pressure exerted at different heights along the tank – more rivets at the bottom where the pressure is highest and fewer rivets at the top where the pressure is lowest.
