Scientists at Carbon8 Systems have found a way to treat industrial residues, like the fine powder on display, with captured carbon dioxide.

Their ‘carbonation in a box’ technology turns the residues into aggregates – the larger granules – that are then used to make concrete. This technology can be added to existing industrial sites, so that companies can reduce their carbon dioxide emissions and avoid sending waste to landfills.

The aggregate is formed through the reaction of CaO with CO2 to form CaCO3 The aggregate has a carbon footprint of -90kg per tonne, formed through the reaction of the alkaline by-pass dust with CO2 from a cement plant flue stack.
