High Speed Train Power Car diesel electric locomotive Class 43 number 43302 named The Journey Shrinker. Holder of the World speed record for diesel traction. Built at Crewe in October 1978
New in October 1978 as number 43102, the locomotive was initially part of the Eastern Region High Speed Train set number 254024. 43102 made history on 1st November 1987 when it established a speed record for diesel traction of 148.5 mile per hour between York and Darlington as part of a test run trying out a new bogie design for the Mark 3 carriages. Renumbered 43302 and re-engined with an MTU power unit replacing the Paxman Valenta it was built with, it was named "The Journey Shrinker" in February 2021, having seen service with Virgin Trains Cross Country and East Coast, GNER, National Express, LNER and East Midlands Railway. It was due to be withdrawn from service in May 2021.
