One photograph titled ‘Titled woman among 37 farmers in court on Tithe charge’. Caption on the back reads: ‘Lady Eve Balfour, one of the best known agitators against tithes, was among 37 farmers who answered a charge at Castle Hedingham, Essex, arising out of the tithe war. Attempts were made to remove goods distrained upon for the tithe from Delyvins Farm, Gestingthorpe owned by Mrs. M Gardiner, a widow. Farmers gathered in protest. During the hearing a crowd of farmers gathered outside the court. PHOTO SHOWS: - Lady Eve Balfour chatting to one of the oldest farmers, Mr. A. Holes, aged 74.’
