One photograph of a steeplejack testing a bosun's chair. Caption on back reads: 'Steeplejacks, painters and other men who work at heights will soon have a new and safer type of bosun's chair, following tests at a Southall (Mddx) works by a master steeplejack from Brixton (London), Mr. A.E. Beaumont. The present type of chair now used consists of a wooden seat suspended by ropes hooked at each corner. The new chair which is expected to be recommended by the British Standards Institution, is enclosed by a 'cradle' and will have straps for additional safety. Mr. Beaumont, who has been a steeplejack for 40 years, is a member of the committee formed to recommend a new and safer type of bosan's chair and fifteen designs have been studied and tested. PHOTOGRAPH SHOWS: GEORGE GALE, a rigger from Norwood, who works for Mr. A.E. Beaumont, is seen trying out one of the new types of bosun's chairs at Mr. Beaumont's Brixton (London) works'.
