The photograph was taken for the Daily Herald newspaper to accompany an article about the new industrial estate in Dumfrieshire, built to provide jobs for people from throughout the UK as part of an initiative to boost the economy after the Second World War.

The caption on the back of the photograph reads as follows;

In the Vale of Leven, Dumfrieshire is one the 18 estates established in Scotland and financed by the Board of Trade which has been responsible for providing 60,000 more jobs in factories since the end of the war. All the estates offer modern factory space at cheap rentals with canteen facilities, lighting, transport and recreation and with the development of industrial sites and ex Government factories have a potential employment of 122,700.
