One photograph of male workers pouring molten metal to cast a bell, titled 'Casting Bells for a South African Centenary'. Caption on back reads: 'A large order for a carillon of 23 bells, the largest of which weights 3 1/2 tons, has been placed with Gillett and Johnston of Croydon to celebrate the centenary of the first British settlement in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The campanile has already been erected and fitted with a clock to which the Croydon firm is adding Westminster chimes and electric playing mechanism for the bells. the present Mayor and leading citizens have raised a fund to defray cost of bells. Photo shows- Casting one of the bells at the Croydon works'.
