Scale model of 1st generation OneWeb satellite with display stand, c2020.
A constellation of over 600 satellites like this one form OneWeb's communications network, which provides wireless broadband connectivity anywhere on Earth. Conventional, ground-based internet infrastructure leaves half of the world's population disconnected, for a variety of reasons including adverse terrain, climate, and funding. The aim of satellite internet providers like OneWeb is to provide a high-speed, reliable connection anywhere with satellite signal, from the mountains to the open ocean. The first satellite was deployed in February 2019, and the constellation was completed in May 2023, providing total coverage.
OneWeb's constellation sits in low Earth orbit, or LEO, at an altitude of about 1200km. The satellites connect to the internet by remaining in constant communication with ground stations around the world. In turn, these satellites communicate with receivers, or user terminals, and this connection enables people with user terminals to connect to the internet.
