Postcard of the 2ZY Aunties and Uncles

Made:
circa 1922 in Marple

Paper photographic postcard of 2ZY radio staff. Photographer: W.V. Garner, Marple Bridge. Made around 1922.

This postcard depicts the team of men and women, known as Aunties and Uncles, who presented the Children’s Radio programmes on Radio 2ZY. Radio 2ZY was the forerunner to the British Broadcasting Company, later the British Broadcasting Corporation. The station operated from a studio in the Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Company Ltd Research Department building before it moved to studios in Dickenson Road, Manchester.

2ZY was probably the first station to make programmes for children. Presenters adopted whimsical personas, such as The Sandman, Uncle Humpty Dumpty and The Lady of the Magic Carpet. The use of the sobriquets ‘Auntie’ and ‘Uncle’ were continued by the BBC for its Children’s Programme presenters.

The postcard supplements other Science and Industry museum holdings of Radio 2ZY archive material, adding context to the operational history of the station through pictorial evidence of the station's presenters on children's programming, including their 'Aunty' and 'Uncle' persona names.
