'Tiswas' (Today is Saturday: Watch and Smile!) was a children's television programme that ran from 1974 to 1982. It was produced by Associated Television for the Independent Television Network.
Each episode was made up of sketches, spoofs and other live elements acting as links between pre-recorded cartoons and films. The presenters, including Chris Tarrant, Sally James and Lenny Henry, soon became more popular than the filler elements, and the programme was very popular among younger viewers. Regular features of the show included 'The Cage' where audience members were confined during the episode and regularly housed with water from buckets wielded by the presenters. There was also a regular spoof gardening segment called 'Compost Corner, full of gardening-based jokes and puns. The show was often visited by the 'Phantom Flan Flinger,' a masked individual who would throw custard pies as the presenters, audience, and camera operators.
This script shows how an episode of Tiswas was produced, including shot lists, segment orders, and occasionally hand-written notes.
