‘Manni’ is a Bakfiets CargoTrike Classic Wide that was available to borrow from 2015 until around 2021 through the fLotte Berlin free cargo bike sharing scheme and its predecessor scheme Freie Lastenradlern Berlin. fLotte Berlin has been hiring out cargo bikes and trikes for free in Berlin since 2018. It works with commercial and private sector partners to provide and support the bikes, as well as operating and maintaining municipally-funded ‘fLotte kommunal’ free cargo bikes. This trike represents a response to climate change by reducing the environmental impact of personal transport. Active travel, like cycling, is being promoted as a zero carbon transportation option but also for the health benefits of increased exercise. Cargo bikes solve the problem of journeys with children or bulky or heavy items that would otherwise be completed by car.
