Digital videotapes of rushes made by BBC Wales during the making of the programme: 'Timewatch: Rocket and its Rivals', the final programme was broadcast on BBC 2 on 24 January 2003. Most of the rushes were filmed at the National Railway Museum, York.
The purpose of this BBC programme was to recreate the Rainhills trials, with replicas of the locomotives that took part at the time: Rocket, Sans Pareil and Novelty. 173 years after the original trials, a television crew filmed all the preparation, including work and repairs done on the replicas. A team from the National Railway Museum worked on Rocket and Sans Pareil replicas, working engines in the Science Museum Group permanent collection (Rocket replica 1979-7002, Sans Pareil replica 2009-7054). Novelty replica came from the Swedish Railway Museum.
