- Made:
- 1824-11-20 in United Kingdom
- maker:
- George Stephenson
A plan and section of an intended railway or tramroad from Liverpool to Manchester in the County Palatine of Lancaster, for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. Signed by George Stephenson, Engineer and Thomas O Blackett surveyor, 20 November 1824.
The first plans for the Liverpool and Manchester Railway were produced by surveyor William James, however he was declared bankrupt and imprisoned in 1822. In June 1824 George Stephenson was appointed to replace James and this is the plan that he produced just 5 months later.Stephenson had difficulty accessing the land of the planned route due to objections from landowners and consequently accepted the plans proposed by James, subject to some checks. The plans were submitted to Parliament in February 1825 but they were rejected, so this plan does not show the railway as built. George Stephenson left the project and revised plans submitted the following year which were accepted.
