‘Little Red Bike’ No. 1906183 was available to hire as part of the Hangzhou Public Bicycle Scheme since 30/03/2020. The Hangzhou Public Bicycle Scheme is based in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang province, China. The scheme started in 2008 and now has more than 116,000 bikes that can be hired from 5159 rental sites with around 360,000 rentals per day. When it won an Ashden award in 2017, it was the biggest public bike share scheme in the world. This bike represents a response to climate change by reducing the environmental impact of personal transport and encouraging public transport use. Hangzhou Public Bicycle Scheme promotes active travel as a zero-carbon transportation option and to reduce traffic congestion. The hire scheme links up bikes with the city’s bus routes to solve the problem of the first and last mile of a journey and increase uptake of public transport.
