A prototype cylindrical (18650 format) dry cell containing niobium technology, made by Nyobolt Ltd in September 2022 at Coventry University as part of a development programme of high power, fast charge batteries.
This battery was made by Nyobolt, a company founded in 2019 by Professor Clare Grey, Dr Kent Griffith and Dr Sai Shivareddy, who also serves as CEO. The fast charging material that continues to be developed by Nyobolt and found inside these cells is the patented niobium tungsten oxide (NWO) anode material.
Currently branding themselves as ‘the solution to charge anxiety’, it is evident that Nyobolt’s technology is set up to meet a desire for shorter wait times when charging electric vehicles. Their goal is to reduce electric vehicle charging times to under five minutes. Alongside electric vehicles, the batteries could also find homes in the giant trucks used for mining and other heavy duty industrial vehicles, along with cordless power tools, and other scenarios that require high power and fast charging.
