A 610mm diameter Graphite Electrode used in the production of recycled steel in an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), produced by UKCG in Belper in 2022 from a recycled larger electrode that broke during use.
This object is a graphite electrode manufactured to be used in an electric arc furnace (EAF). In an EAF a current is passed through graphite rods, generating intense heat from electricity to melt scrap steel for recycling, making new steel. This 610mm diameter graphite electrode was manufactured by United Kingdom Carbon and Graphite Co Ltd (UKCG) in Belper who specialise in the manufacture, machining, testing and global distribution of carbon and graphite products. Steel furnaces are typically powered by coal, not electricity, and for every tonne of steel produced in 2018 an average of nearly 2 tonnes of carbon dioxide was emitted. No other industrial material currently has a greater climate impact as of 2023.
