Portrait of Alan Turing by Baiba Auria, Alan Turing (II), a signed Giclée print. Made in her studio in Afflecks Palace, 52 Church Street, Manchester, 2023.

Baiba Auria’s rainbow portrait of the mathematician Alan Turing (1912-1954) emphasises Turing’s posthumous iconic status to the LGBT+ community in Manchester. This is clearly communicated using the six rainbow stripes that form the background of the portrait.

Manchester based artist Baiba Auria was born partially blind. She uses powerful aids to see. Images and colours leave permanent impressions on her. Her unique sight is reflected in her portrait of Turing, which uses bold colours and has an almost kaleidoscopic quality. Fittingly for Turing, Auria’s print was made in the digital medium and then Giclée printed onto archival paper.
