A vino-colorimètre, an apparatus to determine the colour quality of red wine, by Jules Salleron (1829-1897). Salleron was a maker of precision instruments, based in Paris, on 24 Rue Pavée-au-Marais. Included in the vino-colorimètre is a scale used to compare against samples of red wine, with ten varying shades of red to violet red, based on French chemist Michel Eugène Chevreul’s (1786-1889) system of classifying and identifying colours. Also includes a French, second edition instruction manual (dated 1885) for using the instrument, with a list of other apparatus for sale; and a viewing cone to block out exterior light.
