The central drawing office was located in Derby, at Nelson Street, and in 1933, under Lord Stamp, Derby became a national research centre with the establishment of the LMS Scientific Research Laboratory in 1933 on the west side of London Road. In 1967 the Drawing Office staff moved to the newly opened Railway Technical Centre.
