1835-1837 - educated at Cotterstock, Northamptonshire. 1837-1839 - educated at Laleham, under his uncle, John Buckland. 1839-1844 - attended Winchester College. 1845 - travelled to Giessen in Germany, to study chemistry with Liebig. 1848 - proceeded BA from Christ Church, Oxford. 1848-1851 - studied medicine at St George's Hospital, London. 1852 - house surgeon at St George's Hosptial, London. 1854 - became assistant surgeon in the 2nd Life Guards. 1856 - joined the staff of the Field newspaper. 1858 - began Curiosities of Natural History. 1865 - started a weekly journal called Land and Water. 1867 - following the resignation of Frederick Eden, he was appointed inspector of salmon fisheries. He was appointed scientific referee to the South Kensington Museum.
