Independent Broadcasting Authority 1990

The Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) was a regulatory body in the UK for commercial broadcasting between 1972 and 1990. The IBA expanded the remit of the Independent Television Authority (ITA), constituted under the provisions of the Television Act 1954, to cover both TV and radio following a Command Paper (4636) issued by the UK government in 1971 to introduce commercial radio broadcasting. Further to this, in 1972 the Sound Broadcasting Act gave the ITA responsibility for organising new Independent Local Radio stations. The ITA was thus renamed the IBA as it became responsible for both commercial Television and Radio broadcasting. The IBA was disbanded in 1990 and replaced by the Independent Television Commission, the Broadcasting Standards Commission (BSC) and the Radio Authority (these bodies have since been replaced with one regulator, Ofcom).
