John Chillingworth was born in London on 18th January 1928 and served as an Army photographer during the Second World War. He worked for 'Picture Post’ from 1949-1956, producing over 400 photo-essays for the magazine. The Getty Images' Hulton Archive holds four hundred picture essays from his days with Picture Post, which used narrative photography to inform, entertain and influence the conscience of its readers. After 1956, Chillingworth concentrated on journalism and continued to take photographs on a freelance basis. He ran his own management consultancy from the 1970s. He was an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and passed away on 6th April 2025, aged 97 years.

Eleven contact sheets containing images taken by John Chillingworth to be considered for use in the June 1958 issue of INGOT magazine. The images show various stages of the Bessemer process at Ebbw Vale Works, Wales, and are labelled '10 Mar 1957/1, ‘10 Mar 1957/3-5', ‘10 Mar 1957/8-10', ‘10 Mar 1957/13-15A’ and ‘10 Mar 1957 Test.’ Three of the images on these sheets were published in the INGOT picture story “Men at Work: The Bessemer Platform”, pp. 30-33

One 11.5 x 8 inch, black and white print stamped ‘A John Chillingworth Original’ with reference '10 Mar 1957/3/15A.’ The image consists of an operator standing behind a steel screen conducting a pyrometer test to check the temperature within the Bessemer at Ebbw Vale Works, Wales. The image appears in the picture story “Men at Work: The Bessemer Platform,” June 1958 issue, pp. 30-31. The print has a yellow job sticker on the reverse with the following details: Job: INGOT mag CB, Date out: 17.3.58, Screen: 120, Height: 3 1/4 inches, Width: 5 inches. The reverse contains a ‘copyright of the British Steel plc’ stamp and a stamp for the British Steel plc records centre Irthlingborough with location number given as ‘1562 852c1b1.’
